Home EV Charging FAQs — Everything You Need to Know

Got questions about home EV charging? Here are the most common questions we get from homeowners across Greater Manchester.

Home EV charging is one of the fastest-growing areas of domestic electrical work. Here are the most common questions we receive from homeowners across Greater Manchester.

Can I Charge My EV from a Standard 3-Pin Socket?

Yes, but it's slow and not recommended as your primary charging method. A standard 2.3kW charge from a 3-pin plug adds around 8 miles of range per hour. For most EVs, this means leaving the car plugged in all day for a full charge. A 7kW home charger adds around 30 miles per hour — much more practical.

Prolonged use of 3-pin socket EV charging can also stress the socket and wiring, which wasn't designed for sustained high-current loads.

How Much Does a Home EV Charger Cost to Install?

A typical 7kW home EV charger installation costs £600–£1,200 including the unit and installation. Factors affecting cost include:

  • Cable run length from consumer unit to charger location
  • Whether consumer unit upgrades are needed
  • The charger brand and specification
  • Whether groundwork (for a separate garage) is required

Government grants of up to £350 are available for eligible homeowners (OZEV EVCG).

How Long Does Installation Take?

For a straightforward installation — charger on an exterior wall with a short cable run — allow 2–4 hours. More complex installations (detached garage, long cable runs, consumer unit upgrade) take longer.

Where Should I Put My Home Charger?

The most common locations are:

  • Driveway or front of house — convenient, requires weatherproof charger
  • Garage wall — sheltered, keeps charger out of view
  • Side of house — works well if parking is alongside the property

The charger should be as close as possible to your consumer unit to minimise cable run costs.

Do I Need to Upgrade My Consumer Unit?

If your consumer unit is modern with a spare 32A way available, no upgrade is needed. If it's full, an upgrade is required. Your electrician will assess this at survey stage.

Can I Get a Grant for an EV Charger?

The OZEV Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant (EVCG) provides 75% towards the cost of a home charger, up to £350. Eligibility requires:

  • Owning, leasing or having ordered an eligible plug-in vehicle
  • Property in England, Scotland or Wales
  • Installation by an OZEV-registered installer

We are OZEV registered and apply the grant on your behalf.

Will My Electricity Bill Go Up?

Yes, but far less than the equivalent fuel cost. Charging a 60kWh battery from empty costs approximately £15–£24 at typical UK electricity rates, versus £90+ to fill a petrol tank with equivalent range. On an off-peak tariff (Octopus Go, etc.), costs reduce further to £6–£8.

Can I Charge From Solar Panels?

Yes — smart EV chargers can be configured to prioritise charging from solar PV generation. This requires a compatible charger and either a direct connection to your inverter or a solar monitoring system.
